How do you address diversity, equity and inclusion in your company?
A change in the approach we use can bring concrete results: linking DEI to business goals, taking emotion out of the equation and focusing on behavior change.
Any attempt to change hearts and minds causes an emotional reaction: we feel threatened because we are asked to abandon the beliefs and values we cling to. Deep down, we may feel as if we have been openly and personally criticized for what we have been up to now.
Focusing on business behaviors and goals makes change “impersonal,” objectifies it: we are not the ones who need to change, but rather a new norm to be applied.
Over time, the result is that our new behaviors change our beliefs and we may hardly notice…
